Growing up, as would be many boys from my generation, I enjoyed watching War and Martial Arts movies. The simple storylines of a peaceful community being suddenly interrupted by the arrival of an evil presence, only to be vanquished by a seeming commoner gave me hope that I could one day do the same, only in real life. As a reservist Light Infantry officer, I enjoy the mental and physical sparring that comes from being paired up against a real thinking opposition, always numerically and resourcefully superior to myself. This is the same experience in my business life, where my business competition is always better funded and resourced than I am. The challenge now, as in Wu-style Taichi, is to empathise with the opposition so well, that I cannot help but win every encounter. As a Christian, learning Wu-Style Taichi has opened my eyes to how frighteningly created the human body is. The complexity of the joints and muscles coming together to do the seemingly impossible is always a delightful new experience. I am extremely privileged to have wonderfully generous instructors who are always willing to share what they know, and classmates with whom I can train safely with, and whom I know and trust as friends and family. Always faithful. Always ready. Always training. |
